I Can’t Wait For…The Sorceress of Sky Serpents by Eden Robinson

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted over at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about but haven’t yet read. Most of the time they’re books that have yet to be released, but not always. It’s based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme, which was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week my Can’t-Wait-For Book is The Sorceress of Sky Serpents by Eden Robinson!

From the bestselling author of the Trickster trilogy comes a bold fantasy inspired by the Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest, set on a dangerous planet where monsters haunt the survivors of an apocalyptic sorcerers' war.

As the daughter of the Guardian of the Eagle Clan and the granddaughter of its shaman, Yuala longs to become a warrior or a healer or, if all else fails, to make a strategic marriage to cement an alliance that will help protect her village of Winter Haven. But in a world where her mother can rain down fire on their enemies and other fighters can move objects with their minds, Yuala’s only gift is her ability to connect with creatures regarded as warlike Forest People, giant, flesh-eating octopuses, dog-sized cave worms and other abominations let in after warring sorcerers broke open the world.

Misfit Yuala's one recognized talent is for getting into trouble. But just as she is giving up on her dreams, her powerful grandfather decides that her strangeness means she is destined to become the next Clan shaman. With fear and hope in her heart, Yuala plunges into a grueling supernatural apprenticeship, thrilled to be on a useful path at last.

Meanwhile far to the south, a new chief of a rival nation has seized power and is on the hunt for the Sorceress of Sky Serpents, whose coming seers have foretold. As a battle brews on the shores of Winter Haven, something fiery builds in Yuala, too—but will she come into her power and save her clan before it’s too late?

YOU CAN’T POSSIBLY READ THAT DESCRIPTION AND THEN HAVE TO ASK WHY I’M EXCITED FOR THIS.

IT IS SO OBVIOUS.

IT IS SELF-EVIDENT.

THE SKY IS BLUE, WATER IS WET, AND SIA IS EXCITED FOR SORCERESS OF THE SKY SERPENTS.

BRB I NEED TO SHRIEK INTO A PILLOW.

Eden Robinson’s Trickster trilogy was YA, more or less, but as far as I can tell after looking into Sorceress, this is solidly an Adult novel – a relief and delight to me, since I generally prefer Adult. And it’s the start of a new trilogy! Which makes perfect sense, because that does NOT sound like a story that can be wrapped up in one book, unless the book is truly massive!

The bad news is that this is currently being published only in Canada. I think it will be possible to order the hardback from the US, but I don’t know how expensive that might be. At least via Kobo, the ebook seems to be available in quite a few international markets, which is how I’ll be nabbing my copy! (And Kobo lets you set your country to anywhere, so, you know. Wherever you are, you should be able to buy the ebook that way!)

I would hope that it won’t take long for an Eden Robinson book to get picked up by publishers outside of Canada. But alas, most of us will probably have to wait for that. (Though USians, I urge you to let your local libraries know about this book! I wouldn’t be shocked if they can work some magic to get hold of copies.)
