Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted over at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about but haven’t yet read. Most of the time they’re books that have yet to be released, but not always. It’s based on the Waiting on Wednesday meme, which was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine

This week my Can’t-Wait-For Book is The Heresy of Thieves by Mia V. Moss!

The Heresy of Thieves (Spellfall Series, #1) by Mia V. Moss

From debut novelist Mia V. Moss comes a sweeping new epic fantasy series:

Vael stole magic from the gods for Her people and put an end to centuries of unrest.
Now magic is gone, and the battle for the Witchlands’s soul begins.

After a millennium of prosperity and magic, one catastrophic night undoes the realm of Yvaelen. Magic has fallen, and prayers to Vael the Giver go unanswered.

Jal Riago knows when it’s time to move on from a con. She can’t maintain her false refugee heiress story forever, and her benefactors grow weary of playing host. Just when she’s about to confess and cut ties, a deadly raid sets Jal’s life on a collision course with a powerful entity reckoning with its own madness.

The young, steadfast King Thealys Vorrine inherited the throne of Dynestra after her parents’ deaths at Spellfall. But sparks of unrest flare all too quickly into the unpredictable wildfire of rebellion, and King Vorrine must forge headlong into unknown territory.

Royal knight and notorious rake Ember Carrado is trying his best to get fired. Instead, when he’s paired with a judgmental paladin and sent on a mission to hunt down a rampaging mythical beast, he finds himself face-to-face with the past he’s been running from since Spellfall.

Beacon Wylda Lorcanthas wields a sharp tongue and the second-highest office in the Church of Vael. When the head of the Faith dies, Wylda must seek out a biddable successor. Unfortunately, the clergy’s clear favorite is a charismatic priest who promises the restoration of magic—for those willing to partake of a bloody cost.

The dark betrayal behind Spellfall, and the very fabric of Yvaelen’s faith, will be hidden no longer. What began with a thief’s touch will end with a reckoning. And salvation for some may be a waking nightmare for others.

I MEAN

JUST LOOK AT THAT FREAKING COVER!!! That’s a MANTICORE right there! How often do we get a manticore on a book cover?! Even Fonda Lee’s Untethered Sky (where manticores are kinda important!) didn’t get one on its cover!

(Major props to Dark Ink Press, the publisher of Heresy, right there.)

Maybe I’m reading too much into it – but a manticore on the cover feels like a signal that, yes, this book really IS going to be doing something wildly weird and unique. Manticores are not common fantasy beasties, you know? The fact that Moss is an author who even knows what manticores ARE has me excited. Does that make sense?

Plus, Moss mentioned online that the manticore’s wings are made of knives. KNIFE-WINGS.

Excuse me while I swoon.

I’ve actually been looking forward to Heresy for AGES, since the pub deal was announced – and you can see why with that description! A world that lost all its magic! Religion! Intrigue! A missing god (or something? What IS Vael? ‘Stealing from the gods’ implies that Vael is/was not a god, right? Or it would be ‘stealing from the other gods’.) (Also, prayers going unanswered – does that imply prayers used to get answers?!) A knight who’s trying to get fired!

Not in the description, but something else I found while stalking Moss’ social media – nonbinary gods! HI THANKS YES FREAKING PLEASE!!!

Luckily I don’t have to wait too long for this one – I have an early copy waiting on my Kobo. BUT I HAVE OTHER THINGS I NEED TO FINISH READING BEFORE I START IT AND THE DELAY IS PAINING ME!

An accurate representation of how the wait feels
