Every Month is Pride: Queer Adult SFF for the Rest of 2026

Posted 1st July 2026 by Sia in Book News, Lists, Queer Lit / 12 Comments

It’s become a yearly tradition of mine to wrap up Pride by highlighting the queer (Adult) SFF coming in the rest of the year – as a reminder to all of us that pride is not just for June!

Thus!

Queer Adult SFF books coming out post-Pride!

I gave up on trying to include EVERY queer Adult SFF release – there were just too many for me to feature. (Isn’t that amazing?!) So these on my list are ‘only’ the ones I especially want to boost – ones I know are amazing from reading early copies, or that I’m hoping will be as great as they sound!

(If you DO want a list of every queer SFF release, I strongly recommend Kila Writes’ Queer SF Masterlist, which is EXTREMELY thorough. Kila features YA releases too!)

Please feel free to suggest more titles in the comments! Indie and self-published both welcome. I’ll only be adding ones I’m personally interested in, though. And you can check back regularly; I’ll be updating the list with excerpts as they become available!

Authors and early readers, please don’t hesitate to correct me about book details! Especially about what kind of representation a book has – it’s very easy for me to make mistakes when it comes to not-yet-published books!

Also, this is not a friendly space for gen-ai, anyone using it for writing or cover art is blacklisted.

The Brides by Charlotte Cross
Genres: Horror
Representation: F/F
Published on: 7th July 2026
Goodreads

Before Dracula, there were The Brides. . .

1903. Sir John Seward, survivor of Count Dracula’s murderous campaign ten years before, takes up a post as a psychiatric doctor at an Oxford public asylum. There, a new patient arrives whose traumatic experiences resurrect horrors John has spent a decade trying to forget.

1884. Mafalda Lowell journeys from London to Budapest to care for her recently widowed aunt Reka. She uncovers the chilling truth about her uncle’s death, and writes to her secret love Lucy North for comfort. Chaperoned by former schoolfriend Eliza and lady’s maid Alice, Lucy travels across the continent to be with her beloved.

Only Alice, beset by nightmares and terrifying visions, notices the strange black-clad man who seems to follow them wherever they go. When Eliza is struck down with a mysterious wasting illness, her doctor orders her to take the healing waters of Transylvania, a journey with devastating consequences.

There was meant to be four . . .

A dual timeline novel, told through letters, diary entries, psychiatric reports, that places women at the centre of literature’s most famous vampire story.

This was released in the UK earlier this year, but it makes it to the US in July!

The Red Sacrament by Sara Hinkley
Genres: Horror, Historical Fantasy

Published on: 7th July 2026
Goodreads

A savage, hypnotic dive into the lives and deaths of a coven of vampires living in 19th Century Paris, perfect for fans of Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Laura Purcell and Elizabeth Kostova

Paris, 1869. The Théâtre Saint-Siméon is the place to be, if you can get in. The black slips of paper that guarantee entry are rare and highly desired, and given only to certain persons. The actors on stage are magnetic and ageless, performing only at midnight and never seen during the day…

Arnault and his clan of vampires have survived for as long as they have by observing a rigid set of rules. At night, they perform on stage at the Théâtre Saint-Siméon, picking off just enough people in the audience to survive. But they understand the city, and how to live in it without being noticed.

Their peace is shattered first with a visit from Béatrice, a witch who forms a strange connection to Arnault; then with the arrival of Victor de Rouvray and his sister Françoise, vampires from a very different world. And, as Arnault grows closer and closer to the beautiful, enigmatic Victor, he risks becoming distracted from the constant bickering of his immortal friends, from the daily running of the theatre, and worse, from the premonitions of blood, death and starvation that he receives at night.

For a terrible change is on the horizon, revolt and revolution are brewing in the streets and soon, the city, and Arnault will never be the same again.

This is a gorgeously-written novel in conversation with Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire! It ended up being not quite for me

Goodreads

A queer and cli-fi reimagining of a Portuguese folktale about a young trans woman who must save her elder sisters from the King of the Air, the King of the Sea, and the King of Misery

Elixane lives in a village ravaged by waves, storms, and the encroaching forest. When she was too young to remember, her elder sisters each picked a flower and were whisked away: Borboleta to marry the King of the Air, Adelina to marry the King of the Sea, and her favorite sister Dores to marry the King of Misery, who promised: No one will ever love you as I will.

So when Elixane receives a mysterious message from a toad, she sets out to rescue Dores from the Kingdom of Misery. She is aided by the jester-like Marquês of Luck and his sister Jinx, the contrary and beautiful Marquesa of Misfortune. On the way, she’ll have to reunite with her sisters and their magical husbands, break several unbreakable curses—and, perhaps, find a magical love of her own.

One of my most-anticipated books of the year, and my advanced reader copy EXCEEDED all my hopes! Expect my review soon!

Goodreads

Snakes aren’t the only desert creatures with fangs

It’s been ten years since Baby-Blue de Lorraine joined their coven. Ten years of playing in bars with Luke, prowling for their next hunt under his watchful eye. Ten years of being left behind while the others go feed. Ten years of being the baby. And they’ve never killed anyone.

Until now.

When Baby kills the wrong person, one of Zedekiah’s concubines, he’s sent to trial to face The Elders for this third and most egregious offense. Zedekiah is out for blood, and only Baby’s death will satisfy. But for Baby, death might finally mean a sweet relief. Unless they can find in themselves something to live for.

Set against the background of the desert suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona, L.A. Barron’s The Last Rites of Baby-Blue is an exploration of queer identity, family, and choosing life in the darkest of moments.

Love the sound of this!

The Dragon Has Some Complaints by John Wiswell
Genres: Fantasy
Representation: ace+aro MC, major queer character, secondary trans character
Published on: July 14th, 2026
Goodreads

In this heartfelt and humorous fantasy, a dragon whose three heads bear rather…different personalities finds family in the most unexpected of places.

From the Nebula-winning author of Someone You Can Build a Nest In!

Garrodigh was once a four-headed dragon, among the most powerful in Kardoša. After an unfortunate incident, he now has three heads, one stump, and a daily whirlwind of internal bickering. Centerhead wants to rain death upon all humanity, Bottomhead is like a feral cat, and Upperhead is under the delicate delusion that he is, in fact, human.

When a nearby battle goes awry, Garrodigh sneaks into an elite dragon rider academy, pretending to be tame to get free food and a warm bed. Lucky for him, rider Rania Albright is desperate enough for a dragon of her own that she overlooks his eccentricities.

As Garrodigh recovers under Rania’s care, all three heads start to turn, for the first time, in the same direction. Each wants to protect her from the invaders who killed their fourth head—the same invaders who seek to conquer Kardoša. When the academy comes under attack, can this wild dragon and his wilder rider save their homeland together?

This cozy fantasy intertwines epic battles with loving friendships, sharing an utterly unique perspective on what it means to be a ‘monster.’

Wiswell has said that Garrodigh is ace and aro, and I’m not going to be species-ist by not including a queer dragon’s book!

A Voice of Wrath by Brittany Cook

Goodreads

He has twenty-nine days to live. Just enough time to save a kingdom-or burn one down.

Rafa, prince by blood and smuggler by trade, has always known the clock on his life is ticking. A prophecy sealed his fate twenty years ago, and now, with only twenty-nine days left, he’s ready to meet the end on his own terms.

But first…he has a promise to keep.

His twin sister should be queen, if not for the tyrant wearing their father’s crown. To secure her rebellion, she sends Rafa on an impossible mission: smuggle a masked stranger across enemy lines and recover the stolen magic that could turn the tide of war.

Simple, right? Except the country they’re infiltrating is barricaded by stone walls, guarded by the world’s only magic users, and filled with the kinds of monsters Rafa thought only existed in bedtime warnings.

As corpses pile up and secrets unravel-including some from his sister-Rafa finds himself torn between duty and desire. Especially when the silent, mysterious man he’s meant to escort proves far more captivating than he expected.

With death looming and fate sharpening its blade, Rafa must decide if helping his sister steal a throne is worth dooming the world he’ll never live to see.

A Voice of Wrath, a queer reimagining of The Little Mermaid, is a slow-burn fantasy romance filled with treacherous journeys, impossible choices, and a doomed prince discovering that sometimes the most dangerous thing you can do is want more time.

I’ve not been able to learn much about this, but still I’m intrigued!

Yield Under Great Persuasion by Alexandra Rowland
Genres: Fantasy, Cosy Fantasy

Published on: July 16th, 2026
Goodreads

‘Alongside the sexiness and absurdity (and the sexy absurdity) in Yield Under Great Persuasion is a tender, resonant story of second and third chances and being loved when we need it most and feel we deserve it least. Evocative, emotional and endlessly entertaining’
– Jules Arbeaux, author of Lord of the Empty Isles

NOW INCLUDES A BRAND-NEW BONUS CHAPTER

Tam Becket has hated Lord Lyford since they were boys. The fact that he’s also been sleeping with the man for the last ten years is irrelevant.

When they were both nine years old, Lyford smashed Tam’s entry for the village’s vegetable competition. Nearly twenty years later, Tam hasn’t forgiven him. Now Tam has reconciled himself to the fact that love and affection are for other people, that the gods won’t answer any of his prayers (not even the one about afflicting Lyford with a case of flesh-eating spiders to chew off his privates) and that life is inherently mundane, joyless and drab.

And then, the very last straw: Tam discovers that Lyford (of all people!) bears the divine favour of Angarat, the goddess Tam feels most betrayed and abandoned by. In his hurt and anger, Tam packs up and prepares to leave the village for good.

Tam soon finds himself set on a quest for the most difficult of all possible prizes: self-care, forgiveness, a second chance. . . and somehow the unbelievably precious knowledge that there is at least one person who loves Tam for exactly who he is, and always has.

‘Yield Under Great Persuasion is a hot cup of chocolate for the soul. Prepare to experience the softest, most caring romance ever’

Lord of the Woods by EM Anderson
Genres: Fantasy
Representation: M/M, F/F
Published on: 21st July 2026
Goodreads

The cozy fantasy of TJ Klune meets the creeping horror of T. Kingfisher in this magical novel about a man who enters a deadly enchanted forest expecting it to endanger his life, but not his heart…

Clockmaker Arthur Throckmorton lives a quiet life with his sister and her children, only dreaming of adventure. So when a wealthy client offers him a job that involves traversing Shiftleaf—an enchanted forest that claimed his father decades ago—he reluctantly accepts. The forest is treacherous, but the money will change his family’s lives.

The journey quickly turns perilous. Fleeing monstrous birds, Arthur stumbles upon a hidden vale where he meets the Lord of the Wood—a figure from his father’s many stories. Instead of the fairy prince Arthur always imagined, Ira is a morose man, slowly transforming into a beast, his power over a dying forest waning.

Arthur enjoys the safety of the vale, and Ira’s company. But he yearns for his family. To safely return home and rescue Ira from a cursed and lonely existence, Arthur and Ira must reach the heart of the wood to heal the forest. Except the farther they venture from the vale, the more beastly Ira becomes. If they can’t complete their mission before he turns completely, Arthur could lose the man he’s falling for—and never see his family again.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the protagonist has some kind of chronic pain, but I can’t find anything about that now. Let me know if you know!

The Flayed Man by Chloe Lauter

Goodreads

A complex mother-daughter relationship is taken to a new level in this fresh and propulsive novel of family curses, blood-thirsty ghouls, and budding romance set against the Mojave Desert and Las Vegas

Ellis Karsten spends nights working triage in the ER and days having the same conversation with her mom. The early onset dementia is exhausting, but the real challenge is their curse—Ellis’s family must feed daily on blood, or risk becoming mindless, skinless killing machines. When Ellis’s uncle, who supplies their blood, vanishes, she takes it upon herself to find a new source, aided by a prickly paramedic who’s equal parts unpredictable and intoxicating. But as Ellis fights to balance her bloodthirsty nature with a new relationship, her mom’s impossible demands transform into panicked warnings that a fabled monster, “The Flayed Man,” is stalking them.

As she traverses the desert in search of blood, Ellis risks her safety and her family’s secret, until it becomes clear that her mom is right: something ancient and hungry is hunting them, and it has come for her mom. Blood hunger begins to overtake Ellis, transforming her body into something ghoulish and frightening—exactly what The Flayed Man wants. In the end, she must decide who to trust, what she’s willing to sacrifice, and whether she is worthy of a life, and love, beyond her curse—or if she’s going to succumb to instinct and ravage the world.

I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but ever since I read the description of this I’ve been obsessed!

The Demon Star by Jesse Aragon

Published on: 28th July 2026
Goodreads

Gods rule this planet. Demons stalk its canyons while Kings beg for mercy. Can three mere humans rewrite its destiny?

The otherworldly religious conflict of Dune, the cosmic strangeness of Gideon the Ninth, and the heart-pounding action of Red Rising converge in this horror-tinged epic science fantasy debut.

Ysira Naktis was a human sacrifice, marked for death. Unlike the thousands ‘harvested’ each year, though, she did the unthinkable. She survived—and what she brought back with her could change the fate of worlds.

When Ysira’s estranged son is chosen to become the vessel of a god-killing demon, she is faced with a choice: allow him to harness cosmic power at an unspeakable cost, or doom millions to save him. She finds an unlikely ally in Brother Jacen Kheris, once a gifted exorcist, now a guilt-ridden addict, desperate for purpose.

From a demon-haunted canyon to a starbound satellite, they must battle their way through cultists, aliens, and the gods themselves. The truths they unearth are deeper and more sinister than anything they could have imagined.

In this cinematic thrill ride, Jesse Aragon plunges us into a world as intricate and inventive as it is brutal.

This skews grimdark, so bear that in mind if you pick it up!

Bastian may be a vampire, but he doesn’t bite.

. . . Not anymore, at least.

These days, Bastian just wants to live his best undead life: visit charming Italian villages, maybe dance in the square with a cute boy, all with Whitby, his best friend (and magical talking cat) by his side. What he doesn’t want? To stumble across a dead body on the beach, a girl who appears to have been killed by a vampire.

It wasn’t Bastian. He swears—on his own grave.

But the local police chief doesn’t trust Bastian, or any vampire, for that matter, so he assigns detective Nico De Luca to keep an eye on him until his trial. And while Bastian normally wouldn’t complain about having a gorgeous, mysterious man by his side, he has more important things to worry about, because the police chief has called the Vampire Council, and if the real killer is still at large when they arrive, the whole town could be in danger. As more bodies begin to pile up, Bastian, Whitby, and De Luca must get to the bottom of who in Vernazza is framing vampires, before it’s too late.

Desperate for his freedom, Dáinn makes a deal with Jasper: kill my mistress, and I’ll let you keep living. But Jasper wants more than just to live. He has a coven to protect. Their secrets are being threatened by magical forces on and off the island. Bound together in this strange new deal, Jasper fights his growing attraction to the wraith, who is far more human than he appears. And Dáinn fights the urge to devour the delectable witch whole.

The only one who can save them is Birdie Rhodes, hapless historian and sometimes shop girl. Birdie only came to Burr Island for summer work. She has no idea magic is even real. She certainly has no idea she’s now the only thing standing between her witch boss and the hungry wraith aching to devour them both.

As magical forces of darkness loom at Burr Island’s shores, Jasper and Dáinn are both determined to keep Birdie close in Devour Me, book one in a dark, spicy paranormal romance trilogy.

Pherul Baker is a standard-issue lab technician at a corporation that harvests mana. The fact that he works with faerie-people is a secret from the public, but he’s had years to grow accustomed to them. When one turns up dead, it throws life at the isolated dig site into disarray: the humans didn’t know these beings were mortal, and it might have been foul play. Faeries unknown appear on the scene, determined to find answers, and the company saddles Pherul with a menacing new roommate: a corporate spy who doesn’t care that the scientist he now lives with doesn’t want to be involved. It’s hard to judge what’s more likely to get him killed, the suspicious natively-magical people or his (boss’s boss’s boss’s) boss. She’s seen his face now and heard his name, both of which he would so much rather never happened.

This drone is about to learn the world is bigger and stranger than he guessed. There may even be parts of it that are worth taking risks.

The author says this has ‘corporate espionage, a murder mystery, and a wrathful enby faerie sommelier’, so, you know, GIMME!

How To Survive This Fairytale by S. M. Hallow
Genres: Fantasy

Published on: 11th August 2026
Goodreads

A queer fairy tale romance tinged with the horror of reliving your story over and over again, perfect for fans of The Everlasting and Harrow the Ninth.

That can’t be the way this story ends. Try again?

Ensnared by the whims of a cruel narrator, Hansel’s fairy tale has always revolved around tragedy. After being forced to abandon his sister Gretel in a witch’s gingerbread house, desert the cursed prince he adores, and cut the hearts out of innocent maidens to feed a flesh-eating queen, Hansel gives up on the possibility of his story ending in Happily Ever After.

But when the queen orders him to bring her the heart of her own daughter, Hansel decides that it’s time to carve his own path by whatever means necessary.

And when he does, he’ll learn Happily Ever After might not be the only thing worth fighting for.

This is a re-release; as far as I know, nothing has changed from the old edition except the cover. It’s very hard to describe, but the comps to Harrow the Ninth and Everlasting are very, VERY accurate! Think…a fairytale mash-up, but like a videogame. Without being LitRPG. Experimental (and successful!) in the extreme!

From the New York Times bestselling author of Children on the Hill comes a queer folk horror in which a woman must confront decades of secrecy and superstition to learn the truth about her mother’s death.

Some towns stay isolated for a reason.

1919: Frankie O’Massey has always been the black sheep of isolated Boone’s Ferry, Vermont. Her uncle, Dr. Thomas Endicott, has been training her in the science of medicine, something the townspeople are wary of. When a mysterious illness strikes the town, and the community suspects supernatural forces, the two desperately search for a logical explanation. Patient zero seems to be the town’s knackerman—a recluse who collects dead and dying farm animals to make use of their parts.

2016: Siblings Ashley and Malcolm lost their mother two years ago. When their grandmother dies, they inherit a property in Boone’s Ferry—a place they’ve heard of but their grandmother has always refused to talk about—and embark on a trip to their ancestral home. The idyllic town is full of autumnal décor, picturesque farmland, and small-town charm. But some of the townspeople aren’t very welcoming—and they have some unsettling traditions, like leaving offerings to a vengeful spirit four times a year.

I do not always love split-timelines, but ‘queer folk horror’ is a combination of words that always gets me!

After surviving a shadowed childhood marked by ghost stories and loss, Mallory Webb is ready to start fresh as a theater major at her mother’s alma mater, a sanitarium turned liberal arts university in Rhode Island. Landing the lead role in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet feels like a dream—until the blood-soaked spirit she suspects caused her mother’s death resurfaces after years of quiet. With nothing to go on but cryptic symbols in an old college notebook, Mallory hopes the reason behind her mother’s haunting lies somewhere on campus, and resolves to find answers before she meets the same fate.

She’s surprised to make an unexpected ally in Ezra Pierce, the magnetic fourth year directing the play, and takes solace in their undeniable chemistry. But Ezra is a master secret-keeper, and it’s clear he knows more than he’s letting on about Saskia Garin, Mallory’s elusive understudy whose past eerily mirrors her own.

When an ancient, bloodthirsty evil calls to collect on a bargain that dates back to the New England vampire panic, Mallory, Ezra, and Saskia will have to untangle the tragic ways in which their histories are linked—and face the devastating consequences of their own star-crossed love story.

The search for King Arthur’s Excalibur invites danger—and potentially love—in this sapphic historical romance, perfect for fans of Cat Sebastian and Freya Marske.

Lady Edith Darling is supposed to live a quiet life in her family’s manor. She is not supposed to go unchaperoned on a quest to find Excalibur. But Edith won’t let that stand in her way, especially not when she’s on this mission to honor her beloved grandmother’s dying wish. Determined to prove her grandmother right, Edith packs her satchel with Arthurian legends, pastries, and her grandmother’s ashes and runs off to hire a mercenary.

Thomasin Shaw leads the most feared gang in London. For years, she had the constabulary safely in her pocket, until a scandal involving the chief inspector’s wife was brought to light. Now he’s demanding an enormous sum of money—without which Thomasin will lose the protection of the police along with her criminal empire. But when the rich Lady Edith waltzes into her life seeking an escort for a treasure hunt, Thomasin sees a willing kidnapping victim and a massive ransom.

As Edith’s clues lead them to underground chambers booby-trapped with arrows, doors locked with arcane puzzles, and even Arthur’s fabled round table, Thomasin finds herself swept up in the quest—and in Edith herself. Edith is also drawn to Thomasin, despite the ruthless mask she wears. But the chief inspector won’t let Thomasin forget her crimes, and Edith’s father is intent on bringing her home. Every legendary quest has an ending, but finding Excalibur might not be enough to make this a happy one.

This is promising much adorableness and I approve!

A queer, gothic horror romance set in a necromancy-tinged London, sure to entrance fans of The Death of Jane Lawrence and Mexican Gothic.

London, December 1849

Irene Shallcross Haley has dedicated her life to necromancy, a forbidden, reviled art that is passed along through sentient grimoires bound in human skin. With her undead husband St. John—a marriage of kindred spirits and platonic convenience—she has been protecting the knowledge of generations of witches that came before her. Like any magic, it has come at a cost: her reputation, her relationship with her sister, and her soul. But when Irene’s love, Agnes, is hanged for witchcraft, Irene refuses to let Agnes be one more thing that is taken from her.

A true resurrection has not been achieved in two thousand years, but Irene is determined. With the help of St. John, Irene bangs on the doors of the Halls of the Dead, demanding the third part of their triumverate back…or did she? Because the Agnes that awakens comes with both a hunger for raw flesh and a malignant ghost tied to her soul.

Necromancy is the art of saying no—no, I won’t let you go; no, I won’t let you be destroyed—and Irene’s work is not yet done. She must find a way to bring Agnes back to her true self, she must navigate her feelings for her resurrected lover as well as St. John, and she must do all of this without catching the attention of Sir Silas Underhill, the man who sentenced Agnes to death.

Death is not the end of love. But Irene may realize it can actually be the beginning.

I got to read this one early and THE WORLD IS NOT READY FOR THIS LEVEL OF AWESOME! This is necromancy done right, leaning into the rot and ick, transforming horror tropes (like books of human skin) into things to be adored. MAGNIFIQUE!

A magical witness protection program, a town in need of saving, and a sorceress-in-training . . . oh, and the human woman she’s not supposed to fall for. The Blue Moon Café has a little bit of everything (except, you know, decent coffee).

In the tiny town of Pine Hollow, barista and fledging sorceress Talula Smith runs The Blue Moon Café & 24-Hour Occult Emporium, aka the worst coffee shop in town. The café’s horrible reputation hides its true purpose: providing new identities and safe passage to at-risk magical beings while keeping humans far, far away. That is, except for town local Dahlia. Dahlia’s devastating dimples, addiction to Talula’s cocoa recipe, and keen observation skills keeps the smitten barista scrambling to ensure that her magical abilities (or, lack thereof) stay a secret.

But when big game hunters start preying on magical beings, her powerful sorceress mother is called away to track them down, leaving Talula and her barely-there magic in charge of The Blue Moon. With the impending Samhain festival to organize, magical refugees to help, half of the town turning against her, and her ever-growing feelings for Dahlia, Talula’s magical destiny feels further away than ever. But as the hunters set their sights closer to home, it’ll be up to Talula to master her craft, trust her heart, and bring her magical and human communities together . . . before she loses everything she loves.

“A delicious, beautifully written sapphic fantasy full of music, adventure, and tension so thick you could cut it with a longsword . . . top-notch worldbuilding, first-class flirting, and spice that sizzles on the page.”—Autumn K. England, author of Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous

In this cozy queer romantic fantasy from the award-winning authors of Homegrown Magic, two members of a motley crew of adventurers must confront monsters, hostile landscapes—and their growing attraction to each other.

Sage has made her living as a ranger, moving constantly between adventuring parties, but she’s never had the chance to lead one. So when she’s offered the opportunity to hire a crew of her own in pursuit of a rare magical artifact, it seems a dream come true—until she learns that they’re headed into the most inhospitable part of the kingdom with winter looming. Still, it’s a way to finally put her name on the map . . . and how bad could it really be?

Araphi has always loved music, in defiance of her powerful family’s priorities. All she wants is one last occasion to perform before she marries a man she does not love for the good of the family. So when she sees a poster seeking a bard for a party, she eagerly sneaks away to audition, only to discover that the party in question is no festival but an adventuring party, led by a woman she’s been fascinated with since she first laid eyes on her. It’s an unexpected twist, but if she takes the job, she’ll still be back in time for her own wedding . . . and how bad could it really be?

What follows is a life-altering journey for them both, filled with danger and misfortune as their ragtag band of adventurers—most of whom have just met—must learn to work together to overcome the many obstacles before them, not least the explosive chemistry between the rugged party leader used to watching her own back and the pampered city-girl bard, who may be far out of her element but is beginning to feel at home for the very first time.

The first book in this series, Homegrown Magic, was quite sweet, though it utilised one of my least-favourite romance tropes towards the finale. Hopefully this one won’t!

From Dusk Till Dawn meets The Thing in this debut horror novel, where a group of friends must confront questions of identity, aging, and desire during a vampire infestation in an isolated Californian desert.

“Tapeworm is an eldritch orgy . . . directed under the loving Lovecraftian eye of John Carpenter. No amount of hand sanitizer will disinfect this book from your consciousness.” —Clay McLeod Chapman, author of Wake Up and Open Your Eyes

It needs to feed.

After the recent separation from his wife Trish, Victor hopes his friends’ annual weekend retreat to the Californian desert town of Superstition will loosen him up and reforge the group’s fraying bonds. But something is waiting underneath Superstition, crawling its way into their group, and feeding into their desires.

Victor knows too well what it means to repress his desires. He’s always attempted to be the perfect partner, yet often found himself lacking. With Trish skipping the trip, he begins falling into the wild underbelly of Superstition in new ways. When the leader of the town’s Welcoming Committee approaches him with a romantic, sexually charged offer, Victor wonders if it’s too good to be true.

But the Welcoming Committee expects a price to be paid for its services. One that cannot be fulfilled by willing bodies alone. By the end of the weekend, group bonding will have developed a whole new meaning.

Because something is hungry for Victor and his friends.

For fans of Stephen Graham Jones, V. Castro, and Rachel Harrison, Tapeworm is an unforgettable, body-horror vampire novel that answers how far one will go to stop repressing their desires and finally set themselves free.

Not at ALL sure I’ll be able to handle this, but I plan on giving it a try!

The political intrigue of GAME OF THRONES meets the heartbreaking family relationships of ARCANE in this new epic fantasy inspired by 17th-18th century Poland-Lithuania.

Princess Wanda was never meant to rule. After the violent death of her older brother, her father has forbidden her to leave the castle for the last seven years. Her only steadfast friend is her cousin Stach, who tells her tales of the sky on dragonback. When rumors spread of a sorcerer with the power to kill dragons, Wanda takes flight to capture them to prove to her father that she is worthy of being sovereign. But when she forges a friendship in the most unlikely of places, Wanda begins to see the cruelty in her father’s love—and wonders if everything she knows is a lie.

Stach’s satisfaction with the establishment is shaken when a diplomat is found dead under mysterious circumstances. He traverses the perilous world of court politics to investigate their death, forced to reckon with the corruption of the nobility in every coin embezzled and every law circumvented. As he uncovers a treasonous plot and a disaster brings him to his knees, he must come face-to-face with the restrictions of royal authority—and questions if there should be any limits at all.

Both cousins must grapple with decisions, loves, and betrayals that will unravel the Republic. When their land descends into war, Wanda and Stach must ask how to save their nation when its system is irredeemably broken.

I know nothing at all about the time period and geography that this draws inspiration from – which is exciting!

An apocalyptic novel about belief, religion, and the power of myth that blends the gripping, end-of-the-world storytelling of The Passage with the biting wit and epic queer romance that makes Natasha Pulley’s books “delightful” (The Washington Post).

Jesuit priest Avelyn Brocken was born into a mining family in Hreodwater, a small, totally isolated salt town in the Fens of England. At age 16, he fled, abandoning his faith in the god of the mine-the Salt King-and the mythology that killed his whole family.

When a fellow priest is miraculously healed only to then be turned to salt after a visit to Hreodwater, Avelyn is sent by the Vatican to investigate. But in Hreodwater, the town’s gentle doctor, Jericho, tells him that the priest is not the only one experiencing strange cures-and may not be the only one in danger from a substance in the mine that the locals call “salt light.”

Avelyn and Jericho team up to protect the world from the salt light-but they may already be too late: strange happenings are occurring at mines all around the world. At an archaeological dig on the Dead Sea, electrical devices froth salt; at another salt mine in Russia, a KGB officer finds the bodies of five tourists who seem to have turned to salt; and at the huge salt works at Wieliczska in Poland, all communication is lost, and rumors circulate of total annihilation.

As salt light spreads, devastating cities around the world, Avelyn must decide what and who to believe-and whether his faith is strong enough to withstand an apocalypse.

Pulley is very hit or miss for me, but I’m crossing my fingers this’ll be one of the hits!

Learned Edmund, a disillusioned scholar, is transporting yet another precious relic from one stuffy temple to a different stuffy temple. Another great adventure for the ages…

But when Edmund is set upon by bandits, in desperation, he breaks the cardinal rule and grabs for the relic, an ancient sword. To his surprise, instead of unsheathing a rusty, ancient weapon, an alarmingly handsome man appears, wielding daggers of blue steel and cutting the thieves down.

This man is the Dervish, an immortal warrior who’s been trapped for centuries in a sword of enchanted steel, and is angry as hell about it. He hates the curse that put him there, and he wants to hate Edmund, just as he has hated every wielder before him.

But the damned scholar is just so sweet and clever and kind. And while the Dervish may be able to protect Edmund from bandits, cultists, dragons, and strange inhuman diplomats, he may find it much harder to protect his own heart.

From the dark and twisted mind behind the podcast sensation The Magnus Archives comes a suffocating, socially charged nightmare that reveals how fear festers in the cracks of everyday life…

Beneath the streets of London, it hungers…

It’s the hottest summer on record and the city is suffering. Prices are high, pay is low. And on one fateful morning five travelers find themselves trapped in a tube car deep in the London Underground.

It will change their lives forever.

By the time they leave the train they will be bound together as witnesses to a single horrific event. Something terrible, irreversible, and monstrous. Something hungry.

But they can’t remember what it is.

On their own, they each begin to experience strange dissociative events. Time gets lost. Friends disappear. Something stalks them in the shadows. They make an unlikely team, but to remember what they encountered that day on the train, they will have to work together. Because now it’s up to them to understand what horror they saw – and stop it in its tracks before it drags everyone else down below.

Jonathan Sims is a name you should recognise if you’re a Magnus Archives and/or Magnus Protocol fan! Since I adore both, I’m VERY interested in getting to read a novel by him, even if this is completely separated from the Magnus-verse.

At age six, she’s a human foundling, abandoned to the care of the village hedgewitch. With refugees fleeing a strange upheaval in the north, spirits singing to her from a haunted forest, and the hedgewitch working to stop a looming disaster, she won’t escape her childhood unchanged.

Goodreads

A small-town occult horror for fans of Mona Awad’s Bunny and Grady Hendrix’s The Final Girl Support Group, blending ritual magic, toxic friendship, and queer terror in New England.

Witchcraft was just a game. Until the bodies started piling up.

Cinnamon Christine Carmichael doesn’t remember the killings. Not at first. But the blood on her hands, the whispers in her head, and the smile on her best friend Hedda’s face say enough. Something has been unleashed—and it’s using them to grow.

Two teenagers are burned alive in a corn maze as the crowd watches, paralyzed, filming every second. It’s the latest in a string of ritualistic murders that defy explanation. Sheriff Henry McGinty has seen a lot in his time—but nothing like this.

So he calls in Sister Eve.

Eve sees what others can’t: echoes of the dead, glimpses of the future. But this time, the visions are fragmented. Wrong. As if something is blocking her sight. Something old. Something evil. Something wearing the face of her mother, reincarnated in the body of a teenage girl.

As Halloween nears, Cinnamon’s coven races to complete a ritual that could bring the Devil himself to earth—and Eve, Henry, and irreverent deputy Fink may be the last line of defense between our world and utter damnation.

Once the spell begins, it can’t be undone.

And Hell is already watching.

I love EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS! Not sure if it’s contemporary or somewhat historical, but either way I’m here for it!

Stoker winner Gwendolyn Kiste holds up a dark, queer mirror to The Great Gatsby in IN THESE GILDED, GHOSTLY HEARTS, a haunting exploration of the obsession and control at the edges of an American classic.

In 1955, Daisy Buchanan is found dead in an abandoned West Egg mansion, but her daughter Mel knows she’s really been gone for years. No one knows whether Daisy was murdered, or if it was a simpler, slower death: her yearslong spiral of alcohol, abuse, and helplessness. But when Mel enters the estate, she finds Daisy’s ghost, somehow frozen at twenty-three, and a charming, bleeding phantom that used to be Jay Gatsby.

To free her mother, Mel must carve a path through family secrets and decaying revelers: deep into Gatsby’s starving house as it gorges itself on unfulfilled love and grows stronger every night.

Can never have too many queer retellings of the classics!

It does not include:

Five scholars. Five secrets. Five days in which to solve a murder, pass the most important exam of their lives, and uncover a secret larger than all of their own combined. One with the potential to change the world.

Are you ready?

Let’s begin.

I got to read this early, and it is HANDS DOWN my favourite of Marske’s books; I think it’s her best yet. So freaking clever – it has a lot to say about how we treat healthcare workers, and the worldbuilding around the magic is AHHHH! Utterly beautiful and joy-making!

A struggling student, a resident golden boy, and the curse that will bring them together: this queer, trans retelling is Hamlet as you’ve never read it before

Exploring classism, identity, and the true meaning of revolution, this dark academia novel is perfect for fans of R. F. Kuang’s Babel

The summer before his sophomore year, Horatio Bithersea walks into the university library to find Carson Hamlett, resident golden boy and master magician, cradling his father’s dead body. Life at Elsinore, one of the most prestigious universities in the secretive magical world, simply goes on when the professor’s death is ruled an accident—despite the mysterious circumstances and the bloody scene.

A year later, Horatio is keeping his head down, attempting to graduate without his out-of-control magic harming his classmates. That changes when the ghost of Hamlett’s father appears and places a curse on Horatio and Hamlett: avenge his death by destroying Elsinore and its heart, lest the ghost robs them of their minds, memories, and their very souls.

Elsinore has given Horatio everything—knowledge of his magical ability, an escape from his abusive family, and freedom to pursue his life as a transgender man—and now he’s to be its doom. As the two uncover more of Elsinore’s secrets, Horatio finds himself becoming more and more ensnared in Hamlett’s dark but charismatic web.

The question is not if Horatio will manage to destroy Elsinore. The question is if Hamlett will destroy him first. This twisty, queer, dark academia is a brand-new take on the questions that haunt Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Hamlet, but queer and at magic school uni? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO NOT-LOVE ABOUT THIS?

Enjoy a world of sorcerous aunts, musical magic, and moody swords in this delightful tale of finding one’s balance in an unbalanced world.

Ever since she broke the curse that made her live as a harpy for two years, Jules has worked as a cursebreaker, taking on magical odd jobs for minimal pay and the occasional spot of cake. In a society obsessed with propriety and status, she must tread carefully to maintain her ties to both her aristocratic mother and the wild clamor of harpies with whom she once flew. The delicate balance she has struck is disrupted when her childood friend, Anthony, begs for help with a disgruntled sword. At first, she assumes it will be a job like any other, but the sword soon reveals itself to be an ancient, powerful weapon: the dubious sword forged by the magician Wayland Smith that can literally cut through human certainty. Now, it has awakened to challenge a new law in Parliament that would strip millions of their rights—magical and mundane people alike. The man behind the law, Lord Ventstock, was the very person who once cursed Jules, and she’s determined not to let him hurt anyone else.

As her connection to the sword grows, Jules begins to appreciate the double-sided power of doubt: how it can create healthy skepticism or fuel deep anxiety. Certainties can be safe but also dangerous traps. After walking a razor’s edge for so long between two worlds, Jules must call upon all her connections and finally merge the two halves of herself if she is going to defeat Lord Ventstock, embracing doubt and having the courage to be undefinable.

Music magic, an ex-harpy, and a magic ssword THAT CUTS THROUGH CERTAINTY?! The latter especially is SO COOL TO ME!

Published on: 15th September 2026
Goodreads

Circe meets The Lost Apothecary in the first book of this historical fantasy duology featuring Ancient Rome’s most infamous poisoner who changed the course of history to save the woman she loved.

Born in the ancient region of Gaul, Locusta is the last of her kind—a Druid whose communion with the spirit world grants her the dangerous gift of identifying and wielding deadly substances. When Roman soldiers attack her home and slaughter her mother, Locusta is captured and enslaved, taken to the heart of the empire where political plots abound and death commands a high price. Guided by Arawn, the god of death, she must learn to survive within the brutal, glittering world of ancient Rome.

Her strange talents soon catch the attention of the Roman elite, and she becomes ensnared in a double life—poisoner by night for the cunning Antonia Augusta, and lady-in-waiting by day to Livia, the Emperor’s ambitious cousin. As Locusta plants the seeds of revenge against those who destroyed her home, her connection with Livia deepens into a passionate, forbidden romance that threatens them both. Surrounded by danger and deceit, Locusta’s poisons become their only protection against the increasingly unstable Emperor Caligula and the enemies lurking in every shadow.

Locusta reimagines the rise of one of history’s most complex women through a lens of myth, power, and feminine rage. Rich with ruthless twists, deadly magic, and a sapphic love story that burns from sweet to spicy, this is a story of survival, defiance, and the dangerous alchemy of love and death in a world ruled by men.

Locusta was a real historical figure in ancient Rome, EXTREMELY notorious for all the poisonings!

In the distant future, long after Earth’s fall, the Seven Stars colony thrives under a strict neo‑Christian regime that dictates everything from belief to identity. Asher Deka has always followed the rules — a disciplined soldier, a dutiful son of the faith, and a man who has learned to hide the truth of who he is.

When whispers of rebellion spread through the colony, carried by those who claim the Mark of the Beast as a symbol of liberation, Asher’s carefully constructed life begins to fracture. His loyalty wavers. His questions multiply. And time spent with a childhood friend, someone who awakens feelings he’s been taught to fear, forces him to confront the desires and grief he’s long buried.

As the resistance grows louder, Asher must choose between the world that shaped him and the future he might finally claim for himself.

Concurrently, Revera Taylor, a trans woman whose smuggling career evolved into espionage, embeds herself within the Seven Stars under a carefully crafted new identity. Seeking to uncover the regime’s most closely guarded secrets, she finds herself drawn into the underground resistance beginning to reshape Asher’s world.

Blending queer resilience, dystopian tension, and the fierce tenderness of found family, Good and Faithful Sinner is a story about breaking silence, reclaiming joy, and daring to imagine a life beyond the boundaries of belief, following multiple voices whose lives collide at the heart of the rebellion.

Perfect for fans of supernatural mysteries and cosy crime by authors such as Ben Aaranovitch, Josiah Bancroft and Tammie Painter.

It’s three days until Samhain, and the Undetectables are going to die. No longer taking magical cases (not that anyone would hire them), they’ve well and truly given up the ghost.

Meanwhile, Theodore (the relinquished ghost in question) is on the run. Wanted in connection with the Undetectables’ last case, he’s hiding in the last place anyone would think to look, keeping secrets (badly) and forming unlikely alliances (slightly less badly).

When a copycat killer emerges and history appears to be repeating itself, the Undetectables are called up for one last case. Mallory, Diana and Cornelia find themselves in a final race against the clock – but this time, the whole of Occulture is at stake.

Imagine, if you please, a Europe that has a striking resemblance to ours, but magic and all manner of paranormal creatures are real—everyone knows it, but not everyone is necessarily kenning.

Middle-aged witch Tilly Reinicke tries her very, grumpy best to guide, cajole, bespell, and reason with her new, non-magical neighbours, the Bells, so they might respect and work with—not against—the natural and paranormal world around them as they remodel their new plot of land. Success is critically important, because the beings the Bells are affronting do not suffer dismissal or disrespect.

With no side willing to budge, violent retaliation seems unavoidable as the darkest day of the year draws ever nearer. The task looms large, but Tilly is not alone—she has her garden, her craft, her community, and most of all her dead but far-from-gone wife, Ralda.

The author has described this novella thusly;

My darling sapphic witches Tilly & Ralda bring to the page all my hopes for a better way of existing with and within this beautiful superorganism we call Earth.

AND they bring that voice that says, If not …then you’ve had it coming

This Town Ain’t Big Enough (The Gods are Bastards, #3) by D.D. Webb
Genres: Fantasy

Goodreads

On the road to becoming heroes, uniting a small town might be their biggest challenge yet, in the third book of this sprawling fantasy western series.

In the low-down, run-down frontier town of Sarasio, the quicker you are with a wand, the longer you will live—not that anyone with any sense would want to live there. And this ramshackle dungheap is where a group of University greenhorns has just been handed a new assignment: clean up the streets. After all, they have learned to work together and fight for one another. Now they just have to do the same for Sarasio’s feuding townsfolk and elves. Good thing there is a genuine paladin on their side.

But they have no idea just how much trouble they are in for . . . In a town full of reprobates, even the worst of them are terrified of the dreaded White Riders, who control the territory with an iron grip. If they cannot save Sarasio, the empire is going to take notice—and wipe the stain of a town clean off the map.

The days of adventuring are long gone. Cold hard reality is what holds sway in the empire of Tiraas. Which is why the powers that be are growing concerned that their less-than-honorable acolytes are being slaughtered—with adventurers, heroes, cultists, and any other enemies of the Church branded as the prime suspects.

The third volume of the genre-blending fantasy epic based on the hit web novel with more than eleven million views—plus almost four million views on Royal Road—now available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook!

Tropes include: teamwork makes the dream work, best frenemies, and opposites attract.

So far I’ve read each book in this series in A SINGLE DAY, so I’m extremely excited for book three!

If you’ve not heard of this series before, I think the description of the web-novel version says it best;

Incorporating elements of a Western, a Victorian romance, hints of steampunk and inspiration from the early novels of H. Rider Haggard and Arthur Conan Doyle, all set in a world of classic sword and sorcery, The Gods are Bastards is a genre-blending fantasy epic.

Very much looking forward to getting back to these characters!

Magic is a rich man’s game.

Archons control magic in the great city of Aefenhold. Brand-name spells, addictive potions, and celebrity TV keep the poor entertained while they toil in the factories manufacturing magic. That should have been the fate of Max and his childhood friend Lyle, until a violent workers’ strike tears their lives apart, condemning Lyle to the aetherstone mines and leaving Max orphaned with no choice but to sell his labour to a brothel.

Life under the Archon’s rule has given Max a taste for magical narcotics, and left Lyle with aether dust in his lungs and a deep resentment for magic. So when Aefenhold’s rulers announce a televised contest to find the chosen one—a prophesized distraction to unite the city against its detractors—both Max and Lyle see an opportunity to con their way into the contest.

Where Max seeks to steal magic for his freedom, Lyle views magic as a tool of oppression to be destroyed. Their old friendship will be tested as they’re forced to become adversaries against famous rival mages in a series of magical trials. Whoever becomes the chosen one will change the shape of magic forever.

But magic is a rich man’s game, and should Max or Lyle be discovered as frauds, their deaths will be televised next.

The Chosen One Con is the first book in the Lost in the Aether duology—a gaslamp fantasy of industrial magic in a world of designer enchantments and celebrity-branded potions. This is an adult book containing strong language and mature themes that some readers may find disturbing. For a full list of content warnings, visit Trudie Skies’s website.

From USA Today bestselling author Nghi Vo, this all-consuming tale of ballrooms and bloodshed weds The Gilded Age with the Gothic vision of Guillermo del Toro.

Pick a face, pick a fate.

Judith Ban, former convent girl, courtesan, and failed thief, is on the lookout for her next identity. The daughter of a Vietnamese adventuress and a French naval officer, she’s no stranger to risk, but she’s unprepared for the secrets of New York’s legendary Four Hundred, or for the women who build their power at the city’s heart through blood-soaked, gold-etched rituals of demonic marriage.

In exchange for enough wealth to outrun her past, Judith strikes a deal with the matriarch of the powerful Howard family: she will stand in for the missing Howard granddaughter, who was poised to make her debut when she disappeared. With Miss Iphigenia Marshall’s face stitched over her own, Judith is white, rich, and about to risk body and soul in the deadly games that determine which girls will find a match—and which will be devoured. If she can keep her wits and her life, her reward will be a husband with undreamt-of power who will be hers to command…so long as she can keep his infinite hungers fed. But to survive the season, Judith will have to seduce a storm in the shape of a man, before the night to which everything has been leading—the Scarlet Ball where the demons choose their brides.

A razor-sharp subversion of romance tropes and nightmare of manners, Vo’s fusion of history and fantasy does for Edith Wharton what her acclaimed debut The Chosen and the Beautiful did for F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I got to read this early, and it’s so UNSPEAKABLY GLORIOUS that I almost didn’t survive it. Vo’s best book to date, oh my GODS. And if you blink you’ll miss it, but there’s a line (at least in my advanced review copy) that confirms Judith is queer, which means I get to include it on this list!!!

Gardenpath is a graduate student. They also happen to be an amoeba–a slime mold, to be exact–from an ancient civilization that dwells in the space between the stars. And when they turn their many eyes to researching a remote spot on one spiral arm of the galaxy, they stumble upon a discovery that will change everything they thought they knew: a mysterious planet teeming with unexpected life, language, and culture.

One of these alien animals is a creature named Murtis, who lives in a city she calls Pompeii and works in a brothel known as “the lupanar.” Unfazed when her strange visitor says she’s from the stars, Murtis takes Gardenpath into her care, introducing her to the seaside tourist town full of immigrants and shopkeepers who are just trying to get by.

Before they met Murtis, Gardenpath expected to finish their research, present their discovery, and return home to become an acclaimed scientist. But as they look into their new friend’s bizarre sensor bulbs from within the suit that allows them to survive and blend in on her surprising planet, they are beginning to wonder if there’s more to life than academic achievement.

They’re not sure what it is, but they’re going to use science to find out.

When Lucille, Catherine, and Victoria are invited to participate in a trial semester for women at Alabama’s most prestigious university, they each have their own reasons for accepting. But the enrolled women quickly learn that success is not guaranteed, and some of their male cohorts are determined to see them fail. When the men’s pranks go too far, Lucille, Catherine, and Victoria form a coven under the guise of a sorority and call upon witchcraft steeped in the traditions of southern folklore to fight back.

As fascination turns to obsession, two women drag each other into an academic horror of forgery, murder, and rage, destined to be devoured by readers of Plain Bad Heroines and If We Were Villains.

Archivist Celia Kiel has spent her life on the remote campus of Basin College in the Southern Ozarks. Once a jewel of women’s higher education in the South, the school now molders on its mountaintop, its endowment thinly supported by the bequeathed estate of 19th century writer, Beatrice Donahue. Celia guards the legacy of this venerated, yet scandalous author, who has been the object of her illicit desire since childhood.

When the administration announces the college’s imminent closure, Celia discovers a manuscript pickled in formaldehyde, and with it, a chance to save the only home she’s ever known. She will forge Beatrice’s infamous lost work, a spellbinding horror written toward her life’s tumultuous end. To do it, she is forced to recruit her professional rival, literature postdoc Joan Harriot, who has both an astounding talent for mimicry and a dark secret of her own. As their world closes in and the ghosts of the Victorian past encroach, their creative collaboration spirals into an obsession more twisted than even their beloved Beatrice could have penned.

Not sure whether or not there’s supernatural shenanigans in this one, but ‘a manuscript pickled in formaldehyde’ is not a sentence I can forget about!

Seven ballerinas. One fallen primadonna. The audition of a lifetime. And a mysterious house that swallows the weakest one by one . . .

There is no performance art as punishing as ballet—and no top-tier ballerina is as punished as Eden. While others practice their steps over and over, Eden waits, knowing her body can perform only so many times before it breaks.

But Eden will need to be perfect—or even better—at Deveraux Manor, secluded amid snowy mountains, where she and six other hopefuls are sequestered in a month-long audition for the mysterious, alluring, tragic former ballerina Leanora Karagianni. Only one finalist will join Leanora’s company and dance the lead.

Eden wants it more than anything, but not more than anyone. Her competitors will take every advantage they can. And the cursed house twisting around them will push each ballerina to the bloody edge—and over it. As Eden fights her attraction to the seductive Leonora and the stakes turn lethal, she’ll discover that only the dancer who pays the house’s terrible price can become the finalist.

I keep hearing AWESOME things about this, especially re how the author explores the interaction between the haunted house and Eden’s chronic pain!

Meet Martha: perfect wife, perfect stepmother, perfect woman. She’s got an adoring husband who wants more kids with her, a loving stepdaughter who looks up to her, and a body to die for. She’s an absolute pro: Salon-quality blowouts at home? Done. Perfectly plated meals on the table every day? Effortless. Meticulously faked miscarriages so her husband won’t suspect the truth? Just hand over the Oscar now.

Martha is trans, so stealth even her family has no idea. She carved the woman she is out of the marble of a boy, and she’ll do whatever it takes to protect what she’s built. She’s even more shocked to discover that she’s undeniably, impossibly pregnant.

Bekka Trevelyan is an arcanist, and the first woman to be made a Gentleman Scholar of Arcany at the University of Kabakak. Her graduate work was in refining a device to measure the potency of the winds of magic. Over her Yule holidays from teaching, she travels east on a field trip to test her theory about the Winds in the true Wyld. Instead, she finds herself swept up in the investigation of a kidnapping of an indigenous woman and her child by a demon that has possessed the body of a tracker.

Tam Warden was a war hero, and then a sort of government enforcer. He gave up rank and fame to marry across class lines. But government isn’t done with him yet. He’s called back to action to investigate Bekka’s claims – discreetly. This is delicate work, because the truth could unbalance the nation.

Essa Bateman is a mercenary spy, a hard woman with no attachments and very few ethics. Few, it turns out, is more than ‘none.’ She sees the ripples of unrest from the underbelly of society, but deciding what to do about them is a different beast entirely.

In a world where gunpowder is manufactured from the souls of executed criminals, and the ultra-rich seek immortality at any price, where children labour in factories and the desperate poor turn to vampirism, where slavery is rampant and gangs rule the streets…

A few people are about to be heroes. They just don’t know it yet.

This is only getting a UK release this year – it’ll be in the US in 2027 – but I’m reading an early copy at the moment and my GODS, this needs to be on your tbr! Especially if you’re already a fan of any of Cameron’s other fantasy series – clues are being dropped!!!

“Feed this directly into my veins.” —Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author

From the bestselling author of Hungerstone, an intoxicating and chilling gothic horror novel that reimagines Hamlet with a seductive sapphic twist—and where the only thing more dangerous than a family secret is a mother’s revenge.

Revenge me. For I am murdered . . .

Odette and Cecilia are young women, living between their grand homes in Hampstead and the imposing, ancient Herne House in Suffolk. Though Odette’s artist mother Lydia keeps a tight grasp on her, she and her beloved Cecilia are mostly left free to roam, to learn and to love.

But when Lydia inexplicably sickens and dies, a dark veil falls. As the funeral rites are performed, Odette’s aunt, the cold and implacable Claudine, increasingly takes charge of the household, while her father retreats to his study. Odette, lost in grief, disappears into the shadows.

But as Claudine is announced as Odette’s new stepmother, a sinister presence in the house makes itself known. To her horror, Odette realises that despite her death, Lydia never really left. And now she wants revenge . . .

Inspired by Hamlet, the ultimate revenge tragedy, Rottenheart is the stunning new sapphic gothic horror novel from Kat Dunn, the lauded author of Hungerstone and Bitterthorn. Set in the 1890s, this a story of love and grief, mothers and daughters, death and madness.

Another Hamlet reimagining! We are being SPOILED this year!

Explore a universe of stubborn survival and found family, of persistent danger and quiet wonder in the first installment of a heartfelt new duology from Hugo Award–winning author Becky Chambers.

Life on the resource-poor planet of Fortune is challenging, but for its inhabitants, it’s home. For two of them, Signy and Cora, this home might no longer be enough.

Signy is a brilliant but reclusive botanist who bio-prints medicine from her small plant shop, often bending the rules to help those the system leaves behind. Her life is filled with the green of her store, the warmth of her one elderly friend, and the quiet determination to help others without putting herself in danger.

Cora is a rorqual pilot, one of the few with the unique ability to navigate the massive, living ships that connect the scattered settlements of their solar system. Her bond with her rorqual, Colibri, is profound—a connection that is both her greatest gift and a threat to her career.

It is that threat—the “mindbleed,” a dangerous side effect of her piloting—that brings her to Signy’s shop, and her appearance puts Signy in the danger she so fears. But it’s soon apparent it’s not just about losing her license—this delicate balance between risk and trust has the potential to change everything for them.

Told in an alternating timeline of their initial coming together and a not-so-distant future where they have found domestic bliss, this is a story harrowing and haunting, heartfelt and hopeful. Through a love story centered around survival, we are given a glimpse into the very best of what Becky Chambers does in her writing: explore what it means to be human, and what it means to come together.

On a rain-soaked night in modern-day Paris, Larkspur Lee and her academic rivals find themselves at the center of an impossible crime-the murder of their university’s headmistress, the immortal Petronelle Flamel.

In the aftermath of Flamel’s death, the school devolves into chaos. The mysterious investigator assigned to the case, Violaine, believes a cult known as the Promethean Genesis is responsible for Flamel’s murder. But Lark, who knows all too well what kind of horrors that the Prometheans commit, will do anything to stay out of the cult’s reach. Matters are complicated when the mentor she crossed an ocean and a continent to escape re-enters her life, enticing her to his side once again while secretly wielding an agenda of his own.

As the Prometheans’ plans come to fruition and the university’s dark history comes to light, Lark has no choice but to decide whether the power she desires is truly worth the price.

The double-take I did when I learned this was queer! And apparently Lark is a deeply unlikeable protagonist, which is always interesting.

An extraordinary tale of time travel, betrayal, and queer romance, from Claire North, the multi-award-winning author of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August.

In the beginning, the world will end. This is the story of what happens next.

When Cal meets a soldier of the French Revolution, he knows his lover is destined to die. But what’s the point of being a time traveler if you can’t make a few small tweaks to the course of history? A little paradox here, an alteration there—nothing Cal can’t fix, to save the man he loves.

When Fadimatu walks into a museum in 2018, she stumbles upon her own mummified corpse, setting her on the path to a betrayal that has already killed her, and a murder that has not yet come to pass.

And when a sudden rupture in the fabric of history rips through the lives Cal and Fadimatu have built, breaking both past and future, they must reckon with death foretold, love forsaken, and a secret that will shatter time itself.

Three-time Hugo Award finalist Yoon Ha Lee returns to science fiction with a swashbuckling space opera fighting against an evil empire trying to erase history.

In the stars-spanning Censorate, languages other than the Republic’s own lingua rubra, which has reality-altering properties, are forbidden. Nevertheless, there are discrepancies. The Censorate’s star forces are called the Athenaeum Navy, and each of its ships is referred to as a codex. Instead of port and starboard, its soldiers refer to verso and recto. The unholy “stigmata” gouged into the ships’ hulls might, to a foreign scholar, bear a resemblance to verboten texts in other languages.

The Censorate is ruled by its Peacock, Aurelia, feared for the power of panopticon: she can look through anyone’s eyes. Moreover, Aurelia’s mastery of lingua rubra lets her force anyone who can understand her to follow her orders. Valentina, sold to Aurelia’s family as a child to be Aurelia’s oath-sister and companion, is its Swan, responsible for extracting useful information from foreign texts, then destroying them as well as entire languages through arcane arts. Valentina is assisted in her work by lower-ranking linguists and AI assistants who accept temporary contamination by foreign languages as a necessity of their work.

But this isn’t enough for Aurelia. She wants to control and deploy the Censorate’s thousand-year traitor and prisoner, the Basilisk, a man with a gaze so lethal that he destroyed its fleet of old through camera feeds. Unfortunately for her, the Basilisk gave himself a form of aphasia that makes him immune to her commands.

This sapphic cli-fi thriller is a love letter to hope in the bleakest of times, combining the multiverse-bending drama of This Is How You Lose the Time War with the cat-and-mouse chase of Killing Eve.

On a near-future Earth devastated by climate change, Dr. Cassandra Barlowe is right where she wants to be: working on an island of floating trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, as far away from Dr. Yana Gulsvig as possible. Cas’s research on plastic-dissolving fungi is undervalued and underfunded, thanks to the invention of deleria, a drug that allows glimpses into different timelines. For the average user, it’s a way to view lost loved ones or experience a different life, but it also offers a glimpse into worlds where humanity has solved its many global crises. Now, most science funding is dedicated to trawling these different timelines, searching for a reality with the solution to the climate devastation.

But when Yana — the world’s leading expert on deleria and Cassandra’s ex-lover — is killed in a mysterious explosion in the hub of deleria research, taking the hope of reversing climate change with her, Cas is arrested on charges of domestic terrorism. Cas must delve through timelines to piece together what happened, while watching other versions of herself and Yana live out the life they could have had — happier, more in love. As brutal government agents close in and her addiction to deleria grows, Cas has to make a choice: live in the spiraling branches of reality, seeking closure for Yana’s death until the drug shatters her mind, or live in the now, even if that means embracing her own damaged self and fighting, however hopelessly, for her own future and that of humanity.

Another sweeping speculative, romantic novel from the author of As Many Souls as Stars, in which attendees of a magical auction must bid secrets in exchange for their greatest desires. Perfect for fans of Erin Morgenstern or V.E. Schwab.

Reverie and Sons humbly requests your attendance at THE AUCTION OF SECRETS.

Genevieve de Vienne does not remember the journey to the Chateau Reverie. She only remembers receiving her invitation to the Auction of Secrets, writing upon it her greatest desire—to forget the woman she once loved—and setting it aflame.

Leander Sterne does not remember a life outside of the Chateau Reverie. When he receives his own invitation, he does not have any secrets to bid, but his greatest desire—his liberty—is worth risking everything. He has nothing to lose.

Alongside five fellow attendees, Leander and Genevieve must survive three nights in the Chateau in order to bid their secrets and win their hearts’ desire. But the Chateau has a mind of its own. As guests begin to disappear and Leander and Genevieve become more and more entangled, it becomes clear that the rules of the Auction might not be in anyone’s favor…and even those who win might not be allowed to leave.

Written in Natasha Siegel’s transportive, lush prose and set amidst the final days of the French Revolution, Chateau Reverie is a rococo fairytale full of horrors and wonders: both a sweeping romance and a twisting speculative mystery.

In this raucous, tongue-in-cheek spin on the Romanian fairytale “The Girl Who Became A Boy,” a knight attempts to thwart an invasion, save the most beautiful woman in the world, and finally get away from their sisters.

Jules is tired of running low-stakes errands with their five magically mismatched sisters, whose skills include killing plants, inducing sneezing, and making smaller windows … slightly larger. Blessed with a poorly controlled ability to make flowers bloom, Jules longs for a mission where they can actually prove themself. And when the siblings stumble upon a rival kingdom’s plot to overthrow their royal family, Jules sees an opportunity.

What follows is a whirlwind of botched disguises, accidental heroics, talking animals with surprisingly strong opinions, and one very inconvenient crush on the most sought-after princess in the land. And through all this, Jules learns that happy endings are indeed possible, even if you’re not quite Prince Charming. A cozy yet epic retelling of a Romanian fairy-tale, This Knight Topples Empires proves that the greatest victories of all are love and self-acceptance.

I believe this is set in the same world as Herman’s This Princess Kills Monsters!

They did not, however, sign up to save the world.

Captain Grey and his crew of sky pirates have a reputation for doing the impossible. From breaking into high-security military research facilities to conning the iCity elite—there isn’t a lock they can’t pick, a safe they can’t break, or a hidden treasure they can’t find. Until now.

Returning from a harrowing heist involving a neon battery and a trash chute, Grey and his crew are approached by Dalia, the immortal daughter of the infamous ArchGovernor—and she has an offer.

The job? Locate and steal the Stones of Indigo—seven fabled rocks invested with godlike power. The search for the first stone is a bona fide treasure hunt, guided by an ancient map to a deadly, uncharted island that’s protected by a mysterious guardian. The score? One million credits per crew member, per stone. The catch? Well, that’s where things get a little complicated.

The stones don’t exist. They’re a myth. A bedtime story told to little pirates to make them believe that power and wealth are attainable if you just work hard enough.

And to make matters infinitely worse, Grey’s never trusted immortals, and Dalia’s definitely hiding something. Something bad. And if they don’t figure out what it is, it might cost them their lives.

The Howling Dark is a standalone science fiction fantasy novel ideal for fans of Wolf’s Rain and Brother Bear. Set on the post-nuclear world of Erda, the story follows fugitive werewolf brothers Sylvain and Illia on their tumultuous journey home, pursued by the orbital government they fled from and ruthless huntsmen looking to take their silverblood for themselves.

Sylvain is an eclipse-born werewolf who knows neither his bestial form nor the post-nuclear wilds his kind hail from. Raised on the orbital research station Zodiac, he’s grown accustomed to a life of peaceful predictability. Though fantasies of visiting his birthplace may be out of reach due to medical restrictions, he has a loving boyfriend and all of his essential needs are met. What more could he want?

In the opinion of his elder brother, the answer is: everything.

Believing them abducted as children, Illia has always sworn to someday return with his brother to the mountains they were taken from. And when a peculiar turn in Sylvain’s health brings to light an ugly truth, someday becomes now—whether Sylvain is ready for it or not.

Soon enough, the brothers find themselves fugitives on the planet’s surface, pursued by the government and bloodthirsty huntsmen, and under the unexpected guidance of the rebel Sundogs. All that lies between them and home is miles of unfamiliar countryside, toxic wastelands, a parasitic garden of death . . . and the question of how much they’re willing to risk in order to get there.

I’ve been told this has very interesting werewolf lore, which is always something I’m interested in.

Technology has raised the dead, but their new lease on life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, in the first book of this cozy cyber-noir duology.

Hildy Doval is dead—and still unemployed . . .

Humanity wasn’t quite ready for immortality, even in 3025. Ever since the Flicker/Helix company “cured” death with technologically advanced holographic hardware, flicker ghosts have been secondary citizens, lacking purpose and agency.

Spending her afterlife in a boarding house in Hypatia City, Hildy is the least-requested flicker-ghost at Carlotta Sun’s Purgatory House for Spectral Services. At Carlotta Sun’s, Hildy competes daily for ghost gigs against her more marketable housemates: the flighty musician Eyvind, desperate to compose the masterpiece he never got to in life, and Anjali, an imperious silent-film extra whose single surviving motion picture shot her to post-mortem stardom despite it being based on a lie.

Meanwhile, a shadowy, headless ghost called the Graverobber has been spotted emerging from holographic billboards, snatching the resurrected from their so-called lives and sowing chaos throughout the city. When one of their fellow boarders goes missing, Hildy and her friends find themselves at the center of a highly publicized mystery. With only two months to go before a crucial election that’ll decide the future of all specters, they must determine who the Graverobber is―and, more importantly, where they belong in this dead new world.

‘Cozy cyber-noir’? I have to read this just to find out what on earth that looks like!

Queer, Black, and sexy as hell, The Drakon King is romantasy at its best: A forbidden love story between princes in the court of a cruel king and an edge-of-your-seat tale of missing dragons, ruthless betrayals, and stolen hearts.

Two princes, born to a world at war.

Heir to a kingdom built on lies and stolen magic, Prince Reverie has one goal: avoid the crown. Raised by a cruel and violent king, Reverie’s real life begins after curfew—bottle service, masked revelries, and anonymous rooftop liaisons. But when his king plots to seize dwindling majikal resources from the Drakon King, Reverie hits his limit—he casts aside his royal obligations and gets the hell outta town.

Heir to a kingdom banished into the sky, Prince Xandreth has one goal: find a missing friend. His brother, the Drakon King, stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that their people keep going missing, so Xandreth takes it upon himself to hunt down answers.

A meeting that will change them both.

Having abandoned their kingdoms, both princes end up stranded in the dangerous and bewitching Wraithwood, and out of desperation, agree to help each other and then go their separate ways.

A love that will save their world.

But when a myth as old as the world—a bird on fire in the belly of a massive volcano—is whispered from Human lips to Drakon ears, Reverie and Xandreth are suddenly at the heart of a crisis so much bigger than a missing friend or even freedom.

If they can’t come together, the world itself may go up in flames.

In Woodfeast, the sequel to Necrology, Meg Ripley weaves revolutionary politics and dark fantasy for a blisteringly timely look at the rights, communities, and power of women.

As war rages between fundamentalist Freemen and the Dirty, practitioners of outlawed magic, nine-year-old Rabbit and her siblings have no idea how to ensure their culture’s survival. They have nine shards of the Woodfeast, a relic with unknown power, and a host of uncertain allies: Jane, a Dirty woman known to the Freemen as their apostate son; the Warrior, a beast formed from wolves; and Hyena, a storm razing the country and insisting that Rabbit must commit murder to be truly free.

To protect Dirt, each other, and the nation, Rabbit and her friends must understand the history of the Freemen—and the women they tried to destroy—before the Freemen can unmake the source of Dirt itself.

I need to start Necrology over from the beginning, but I loved what I read of it and I have high hopes for the sequel!

Armed to the teeth with confidence, they make their way deep into the Undying Realms to accept a challenge from mythical sprites for the chance to win a piece of ancient magic-but what if their motive isn’t quite so noble after all?

In a post-apocalyptic matriarchy that has erased men and capitalism, a young novitiate destined for greatness faces a crisis of faith when her best friend begins receiving mysterious visions of an archangel—setting her on a path to choose between spiritual purity and human desire.

The year is 2171, and the Earth is not what it once was. The natural world reigns supreme, wild and ungovernable, after a series of wasting plagues and unmitigated climate disasters, the twin coups of fascism and AI, and a final, catastrophic nuclear fallout. Small monastic communities have emerged from the carnage—self-sufficient, female-only religious utopias governed by a strict codex and surrounded by walls to keep the wilds at bay. The new world is harmonious, and blissfully free from structures of oppression such as hierarchy, capitalism, and time.

Seventeen-year-old Igraine has never known life beyond the cloistered walls of the Field or seen a human male. Brilliant and devout, she spends her days in the gardens and scriptorium beside her closest companion, Ophelia. Their studies will culminate in twin posts at the Lunar Abbey—a gothic cathedral on the Moon reserved for the most venerated Sisters.

Their futures fracture when Ophelia begins receiving visions of a mysterious, alluring, and damningly masculine archangel. As doubt spreads and rumors surface about the Order’s darker forces, the girls venture beyond the convent’s walls and into the wilderness—while navigating the volatility of their deepening bond.

When Igraine’s formidable mentor, Sister Agathe, takes a romantic interest in her, devotion blurs into jealousy and illicit desire. In the aftermath, Igraine must confront her unraveling faith in a system that demands her complete surrender.

This sounds bonkers in the best possible way!

Goodreads

For fans of Beautyland and Everything Everywhere All At Once, a captivating, kaleidoscopic debut novel about the life of a precocious girl trying to figure out who—or what—she is.

One afternoon, on a visit to the Bronx Zoo, a jaguar tells six-year-old Grace Goldberg-Li she isn’t human. Not that this comes as a total surprise. Her life looks normal, but no one else, not even her beloved sister, seems to be experiencing things as brightly and painfully as she does. As she approaches adolescence, Grace begins to think that she might be an alien. Maybe this would explain the urge to steal every beautiful object she can find, or the peculiar voice that’s started issuing apocalyptic warnings inside her head.

In adulthood, Grace still can’t figure it out. Is it the world that’s crazy and falling apart? Or is it her? She will attempt, over and over, to remake herself and find her place in it. She will fall recklessly in love with a gorgeous doctoral student; she will live as a tree in a backyard during the pandemic; she will become the best employee that Wendy’s has ever seen; she will travel to the ends of the earth and keep going.

Moving, imaginative, and endlessly surprising, Universe of Grace is at once a tender family portrait, a queer love story, and an epic quest for self-discovery in a world that’s uncertain and wondrous in equal measure. Covering the span of a single life and everything it touches, Universe of Grace shows us that we are each more interconnected and vast than we can ever know.

Hoping this doesn’t end up too literary for me, the way Beautyland did, but I’m hopeful!

The Lambda Literary Award-winning trilogy that established Mercedes Lackey as a master of the fantasy genre is now available in a first-of-its-kind deluxe omnibus edition featuring sprayed edges, premium cover effects, and a new introduction from the author.

Welcome to Valdemar. This is a land where magic thrives, where kings and queens are just and Heralds are true. It is a land at peace—for now.

Young Vanyel is proving to be quite the disappointment. Born with rare magical abilities, his future stretches out before him, glittering with potential; he has all the hallmarks of a legend in the making. Or he should, if only he would train his powers, harness his talents, apply himself in service to the King or seek the warrior’s path. Much to his father’s dismay, however, Vanyel wants no part in such things. No, what he wants more than anything else is to become… a bard.

But wishing away destiny is futile, and, as everyone will learn, there is danger in leaving magic like Vanyel’s untrained. By the time his powers, raw and unmastered, are released on the world, it may already be too late to avoid tragedy on a truly devastating scale.

This is Vanyel’s story: a boy who dreams of making music, he will grow into Valdemar’s greatest-ever Herald-Mage. Along the way Vanyel will confront war and grief, dark magic and the heaviest loss of all–the loss of his one true love. He must learn to reconcile with his destiny, with his heart, and with his very soul. For the fate of the world lies on Vanyel’s shoulders, and if he falters, both he and Valdemar will pay the ultimate price.

Featuring one of the genre’s first gay male protagonists, this deluxe edition of a classic tale is the perfect gift for returning fans and new readers eager to delve into a foundational piece of fantasy history.

I will be honeset: I hate these books with a passion. HOWEVER, I know they are incredibly important to many readers, and I think you all deserve to know there’s a deluxe edition coming!

A luckless healer who reluctantly accepts a magical apprenticeship must find an impossible cure—and uncover his charming mentor’s secret—before it’s too late.

Half-goblin Imryn “Imi” Dyre hasn’t had an easy life. Born into a poor family and now a student on scholarship, he’s marked as an outcast amongst the wealthy magical families. So despite studying and honing his craft for years, it’s no surprise when he’s rejected from joining the ranks of healers. Just like that, his dream of opening a clinic in his impoverished neighborhood dies.

Out of options, Imi has no choice but to accept an apprenticeship under the master wizard Elim Greenwood. Talented despite his relative youth and—to Imi’s dismay—indisputably handsome, Elim seeks a cure for vultrism, a mysterious curse that compels people to feed on the souls of others. And though many before have failed, Imi’s magic might actually be the one solution to the fatal affliction. Unfortunately, all his tests are met with failure . . .

But Elim’s elusive behavior has Imi thinking something else might be afoot. Not to mention he can’t deny the deep affection growing between them. Elim’s cheerful and impulsive nature brings out a new side of Imi, but to pursue a romantic relationship with him would incite a scandal within the magical guilds that could cost Imi his professional future. If he’s going to make any progress, he’ll need to avoid all distractions—and identify a live host to continue his experiments.

With no time to waste, Imi and Elim devise a plan to capture a rogue vultara. But when the creature attacks Imi, his fate lies with Elim and the impossible choice he must make: give up his apprentice’s soul to a monster or risk everything they’ve worked for—and more—to save him.

Happily-ever-after has never felt more out of reach. But one selfless act might just prove to Imi he’s finally exactly where he belongs . . .

You exist because of a crime, because of a curse, and because of a trick.

Blodeuedd never asked to be made.

Created from flowers of oak, broom, and meadowsweet to marry a man cursed never to have a human wife, Blodeuedd has no knowledge of the world, no family outside the marriage, and no power to choose. But a caged animal still has claws, and Blodeuedd will find a way to be free, whatever the cost.

Gwydion knows what it is to be unmade.

Haunted by the years he served in animal form as punishment for his brother’s crimes, Gwydion has turned his tricks to his nephew’s happiness – and the making of Blodeuedd is the greatest trick of them all. But his creation asks questions he cannot answer and drags from the depths of the forest the past he has been trying so hard to forget. Now they both must face their unmaking.

From the author of The Wolf and His King comes a spellbinding new medieval fantasy standalone retelling the story of Blodeuedd from Welsh mythology in a profound exploration of cyclical trauma and transformation. A thrilling and romantic fantasy adventure from Everina Maxwell, bestselling author of Winter’s Orbit.

“There are five of them, all with an exile brand on the back of their hand, and every single one of them should be dead. We don’t understand why they’re not.”

En is a weapon.
Battle spells are carved into her skin, she’s trained to work through pain, and she’s magically compelled with loyalty to the archmagi. When she’s sent on a mission to retrieve a group of infamous traitors from exile in a land of unpredictable and deadly magic, she’s forced to team up with a common soldier to have any chance of success, or survival.

Tamol is a disaster.
En isn’t fooled by the soldier’s silver tongue and good looks. Tamol is flighty, cowardly and the worst soldier En has ever met. But she’s also brilliant at magic and kinder than En has any right to expect. When she saves En’s life, it takes everything En has not to start falling for her. That is, until En discovers Tamol is one of the very traitors she seeks.

The empire never forgets.
Years ago, the exiled traitors were just normal students with a vision for a better kingdom. They put their lives on the line fighting for it and lost. So they were exiled to the Far Peninsula to die. But now, the empire discovers the traitors may yet live, and they’ve unearthed something in the wilderness that the archmagi will pay any price to get.

But the might of an unforgiving empire isn’t the greatest force in all the land. Something monstrous is living in the Far Peninsula that does not discriminate between soldiers, traitors, and kings.

The future of the empire is unexpectedly in the hands of En and Tamol. At least the perfect soldier would never betray her orders, no matter how much she starts to question her command. Would she?

Call Me Traitor is an enthralling sapphic adventure from academia into exile and beyond.

So excited to see Maxwell’s take on fantasy! And that description is FANTASTIC!

Rachel’s death is going about as well as her life. Welcoming a poltergeist to share her body had its challenges, but she’s mostly figured those out: she’s got good friends, a room in a gorgeous apartment, and she’s well on her way to regaining the career her death derailed. What she doesn’t need is a strange, inhumanly beautiful new roommate—a unicorn—with a million odd questions about the human world—especially one who can peer into Rachel’s soul and see each of her dark, dirty secrets.

Isolde has been tempted by the human world for longer than she can remember. The land of the unicorns was beautiful, pristine… and as boring as watching moss grow. But taking on human form comes with more complications than she expected. Like a roommate who’s possessed, opinionated, argumentative… and distractingly alluring.

Getting into a magical grudge match with your roommate is a bad idea. Hooking up with your roommate when they’re a virgin from another dimension is an even worse one. But since when did the voluntarily haunted make good choices?

She was meant to become a dream. Instead, she fell in love with a nightmare.

Acolyte Praer Dundariff is only one year away from her ascension to the dream world, but when her friend dies with a chilling warning, Praer’s world fractures. Praer seeks comfort in the one place she can be her true self: her dreams. Inspired by a beautiful statue in the temple gallery, Praer imagines being in the arms of a dream warrior named Reverie.

But instead of the normal sleepy comfort of Reverie’s embrace, Praer loses control of her dream and Reverie gives her a violent warning never to return. As more temple secrets emerge, Praer abandons Reverie’s wishes and seeks her out in sleep. After all, Reverie is just a figment of Praer’s imagination, isn’t she? But when Praer returns to her dream, she discovers she’s not asleep at all but rather she’s portalled herself, not to the dream realm, but to Hell. Worse, the woman she’s fantasized about for years isn’t a dream at all, but a nightmare incarnate.

Trapped in Hell, Reverie knows that Praer is the only way to break her curse. Along with her other nightmare companions, Reverie drags Praer on a harrowing journey to the gates of Hell. On a death-defying quest to assemble the key to the gate, Praer finds herself caught between destruction and desire. Reverie is her sworn enemy and Praer knows if she can’t resist the pull of her nightmare, more than her heart will break.

Lives of Eminent Sorcerers: And Other Readings is an ensorcelling collection of literary ephemera that encompasses the history of ideas of an alternate world in the tradition of Ursula K. Drawing from history, religion, philosophy, and myth, Ed Halter assembles an encyclopedia story cycle that places the reader as a participant of voyages across endless oceans and pilgrimages to lost temples, as well as a witness to incantatory miracles and hidden rituals.

This is a late addition to the list (I’m adding it at the end of October, months after this list went up!) because, though I was super interested in it, I ahd no idea this one was queer until I read it! I absolutely adored this; it’s going on my best of year list. It’s pretending to be a collection of texts from around a fictional world, travelogues and herbals and journals and accounts of big happenings and scholarly articles! There’s virtually no plot – sometimes a tiny bit of plot within one ‘story’, ie one of the texts – but mostly this is for all of us who’ve ever wished we could scrap the plot and dig into the worldbuilding instead!

The myth of Hades & Persephone, retold from Persephone’s point of view, made sapphic and happy ever after.

They told you Persephone was taken. A victim of myth, a goddess of flowers carried off against her will. That version is a lie of omission.

When Persephone refuses the king of the gods and is cast into the underworld as punishment, she does not wither. She blooms. The underworld does not coddle. It strips. It takes every illusion Persephone carried and holds them up to the dim light until they dissolve.

The realm of the dead, cold and void of life, begins to change the moment she sets foot in it. And Hades, the queen who has ruled in isolation, building walls against disruption since before memory began, cannot look away.

Persephone does not need saving. She needs to see what she can do when the world stops telling her who she is. The underworld is about to show her. But Zeus will not stay patient forever. What happens when the most powerful goddess in existence finally learns what she is capable of?

Find out in Wither and Bloom, a dark sapphic Hades and Persephone retelling featuring divine politics, a goddess transformation arc and a slow-burn, captor-to-lovers romance.

There, Rune confronts revelations that crack his world open. Yesssss, Big List time.

Cello’s Gate sounds SO perfect for me that I am immediately suspicious, if that makes sense. Those are huge comps to live up to!

      INDEED IT IS! :D

You’re not wrong, it sounds absolutely amazing. Fingers crossed it lives up to those comps!

  2. Oh my gosh, thank you for including Imryn Dyre!! 🥰 A couple things (ONLY because you said to tell you if there was an oops!) – that’s the old blurb and it gives a pretty massive spoiler, eek! You SHOULD be able to find the new and improved correct blurb on Goodreads now. It’s also more a queer romance than MM since Imi is non-binary 🩷

Also my book being two books away from Mercedes Lackey… I can die happy now, thank you very much lol Childhood me is screaming.

You’re so welcome! And EEK, I’m so sorry! I’ll get that fixed right now!

      (Delighted I could delight childhood!you :D)

  3. And, I thought my annual beginning-of-the-year lists were long! Your list alone is Pride Adult SFF for the second half of 2026! It’s crazy how many books are published every year!

    • Sia

Honestly, this one KILLED ME. I was working on it for MONTHS, a little bit every day. No way my hands could have handled it otherwise!

But you’re not wrong! SO MANY BOOKS PUBLISHED ALL THE TIME. And you know I have to be missing tons!

A Trade of Blood might not be the last in the Shadow of the Leviathan series, as I just found out that Robert J. Bennett is writing book 4. In fact, he’s been writing it for several months now. According to a post on Bluesky, which I don’t use, so, second-hand information.

  5. Just wanted to let you know John Boyne is a massive transphobe and he only doubled down on his transphobia last year when he was nominated for a Polari prize.

Y i k e s – as you probably guessed, I did not know that, and I’ll be removing his book from the list asap. Thank you for telling me, terfs can fuck RIGHT off into the sun!
